Broomfield High parents and athletes urge transparency after sudden coach dismissal

Students and parents described the coach as a trusted adult and a program builder and said the district and school leadership failed to provide adequate communication and timely responses to parent inquiries. "This deeply affected our student athletes," parent James Schreck told the board, saying parents sent more than 100 emails and received fewer than 10 responses over the past year. "To date there has been little to no further communication about the program's leadership or direction," he added.
Multiple student speakers said they felt dismissed and unsupported when they raised concerns during the season and described a decline in trust after the dismissal. Student Grace Seckman said outreach for help was met with silence and that the coach's removal significantly affected her ability to attend and focus at school.
Parents and community members pressed the board to review the investigation that led to the coach's dismissal, alleging the district's process lacked thoroughness and that some parents were not interviewed. "We respectfully request a comprehensive review of this investigation, including how it was handled compared to similar cases," James Schreck said. Leah Sarno, speaking for a group of families and alumni, said the decision came as a shock to athletes and families who said they supported the coach.
District staff did not announce a personnel decision from the dais or reverse the dismissal during public comment. Board members and staff acknowledged the concerns and pointed families to the board secretary and administrative contacts for formal submissions. Several board members expressed sympathy with students and emphasized the need to balance transparency with personnel and investigatory confidentiality.
The board did not take action on personnel matters in the public meeting; an executive session was later convened where the agenda listed personnel and investigative discussions among the permitted items. Community leaders said they will continue to seek clarity and urged the district to restore trust through direct engagement and, if warranted, a review of how the investigation and subsequent communications were handled.
