Residents criticize bridge work pace; council says utilities, third parties slowed progress

Lake Clarke Shores — A string of public comments at the Nov. 12 council meeting sharply criticized the pace of work on the Pine Tree bridge project and warned the closure is creating a life-safety risk for nearby residents.
"We're six weeks in and we've had one week of work done...Bodies need to be there," resident Tim Daughtry said during the audience-comment period, adding that emergency-response times are affected where the bridge is closed.
Council and staff responded that multiple third-party utilities and permitting requirements — not solely the contractor — have slowed work. Staff said the town has pursued coordination, reported the utilities to relevant state agencies when necessary and that the contractor remains committed. Project schedule language was adjusted during the meeting from an earlier June projection to a target completion in July of the following year, and staff warned that exact dates may shift as parties coordinate.
Mayor Gregory Friebold thanked residents for raising concerns and asked staff to continue frequent public updates; council members asked staff to post clearer bridge-status updates on the town website so residents can readily find the latest timeline.
