DeKalb County Board of Education opens two-day retreat and adopts agenda

DeKalb County Board of Education Chair Deirdre P. Pierce called the board to order April 30, opening a two-day board retreat and announcing a schedule of governance training led by the Georgia School Boards Association.
"Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our April 30, May first... board retreat," Pierce said as she opened the session and read the roster of members in attendance. She noted Superintendent Devon Q. Horton and Board Attorney Melanie Slayton were present.
Pierce said Ms. Linda Buoy, a consultant with the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA), would lead the morning session. After lunch, Dr. Donna Hinton, a senior board development specialist with GSBA, will present on board governance, effective meetings, norms, protocols and leadership best practices.
She asked that the board adopt the April 30–May 1 retreat and executive session agenda; "If there are no objections... seeing none, our agenda is adopted," she said, indicating approval by voice without a recorded roll-call vote.
After adopting the agenda, Pierce turned the meeting over to Ms. Zinda Buie to begin the retreat programming. The board said it will review procedures and updates with board office staff before recessing for the day.
The retreat continues with GSBA presentations and planned administrative reviews set for April 30 and May 1.
