Subcommittee to seek small wellness policy edits and discuss membership; routine motions approved

At its Dec. 10 meeting the Westerly School Committee health and wellness subcommittee reviewed a WellSAT assessment of the district wellness policy (Policy 50 10) done with Karen Weatherill of the Rhode Island Healthy Schools Coalition. Chair Laurie Wykall said the review found the policy "in very good shape" but recommended two wording updates: add language explaining how school staff, students, parents and community members will be invited to participate in the subcommittee, and clarify that triennial assessments of the wellness policy will be communicated to the public via reports.
Wykall said she and a colleague will draft the suggested wording and present the proposed changes to the full school committee. Committee members also discussed whether to add an explicit mental‑health focus to the subcommittee charter; the reviewer had not addressed that topic, so members agreed to put it on a future agenda for further consideration.
Routine procedural actions were recorded during the meeting: the committee approved minutes from the March 8 meeting after a motion and second; members voted to reorder the agenda so the Project AWARE/RIDE presentation could be heard earlier; and the meeting was adjourned by motion at the close of the session. No formal policy changes were adopted at the meeting; next steps are to draft the two minor policy wording updates and return with those recommendations to the full school committee.
