Okanogan County approves $13,926 supplemental for sheriff's boating-safety outreach

The Okanogan County Board of Commissioners voted to authorize a $13,926 budget supplemental from fund 145 to support the sheriff’s boating-safety activities, commissioners recorded a voice vote to carry the motion.
Sheriff Dave Yarnell told the board the county has a $25,187.40 carryover in the fund and requested a $12,926 allocation for salaries, benefits, boating supplies, fuel, training travel and maintenance so the sheriff’s office can run boating-safety events and qualify for vehicle-registration grant funds in 2026. “We initially had not intended on using any money out of that fund this year because of manpower issues, but we’re on a positive road to resolving some of those issues,” Yarnell said. He described partnering with the Okanogan Police Department for a community boating safety event on May 17 and said a sergeant will bring a vessel to allow public interaction.
Commissioners opened the item to public comment; none was offered. A motion to approve “Resolution 50‑2025, authorizing a budget supplemental from fund 145 in the amount of $13,926” was made and seconded and carried with the board answering in the affirmative.
The supplemental will be used this budget cycle to support outreach and training activities; Yarnell said the event partnerships are intended to increase licensure and safety education ahead of the 2026 grant application cycle. The sheriff’s office will return to staff with scheduling and implementation details as the events are planned.
