Princeton honors barber Jimmy Mac and proclaims Communities of Light Day for Unity

The Princeton Mayor and Council used the Nov. 25 meeting to present two community proclamations.
Mayor Mark Frieda read a lengthy proclamation honoring James "Jimmy" Mac, recounting his biography from his birth in Roanoke (05/03/1931), service aboard the USS Midway, and his long tenure as proprietor of Jimmy's Barber Shop at 141 John Street in the Witherspoon‑Jackson neighborhood. Council members and attendees praised his role as a cultural hub; Mac offered brief remarks of thanks.
Councilmember Leticia Fraga presented a proclamation recognizing Unity (formerly called Women Space), noting the organization's founding in 1977 and decades of services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. The council proclaimed Dec. 2, 2024 as "Communities of Light Day" in Princeton and notified attendees the local event is scheduled for about 5 p.m. on the plaza off Witherspoon Street.
Both proclamations were ceremonial and were welcomed by the assembly; council asked attendees to sign a record of those who came to honor Jimmy Mac.
