Long Branch honors Environmental Commission and Green Team after Sustainable Jersey silver certification

The Long Branch City Council on Dec. 11 recognized the city’s Environmental Commission and Green Team after Long Branch received a Sustainable Jersey silver certification and a Sustainable Jersey Collaboration Award for work on Jackson Woods.
A presenter for the commission told the council that “Long Branch was 1 of only 28 certified silver communities out of 486 participating” municipalities in the state and described projects that included updating the environmental resource inventory for the master plan, new recycling efforts, tree-canopy and planting initiatives, and partnerships on rain gardens and restoration work at Jackson Woods. Council members read proclamations congratulating the volunteers and staff for securing grants — including a New Jersey Department of Transportation award for biking and pedestrian improvements — and for work on the city’s tree inventory and Jackson Woods revitalization.
Council members and the mayor praised the volunteer teams for outreach programs at the arts center and senior center, and noted partnerships with Friends of Jackson Woods and the Monmouth Conservation Foundation. Speaker 6 said the Jackson Woods project has transformed the site into an “11 acre space for passive recreation.”
The ceremony concluded with the council presenting proclamations and public thanks to volunteers, and council members offered holiday greetings before moving on to the regular agenda.
