West Concord committee reviews parks, trails and access projects including Harvey Wheeler stairs and Warner's Pond ideas

The West Concord Advisory Committee reviewed progress and opportunities for multiple parks and trails projects in West Concord, noting that some improvements are complete while others remain informal or constrained by accessibility and property ownership.

Members discussed Junction Park renovations (stair repairs, shade trees and an MBTA-lot apron for a potential farmers market), the dilapidated stairs at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center and the DPW plan for an RFP on reconstruction, and a small grassy vantage point near Warner's Pond Dam where a pocket park had been proposed. The Warner's Pond Task Force is also considering whether a fish-passage mechanism could be feasible if upstream dams are removed, which participants said might create a seasonal viewing opportunity.

The group identified several informal trails—along Neshoba Brook and the Assabet River—that are heavily used but not ADA-compliant and in some places flood in spring. Members suggested involving the Trails Committee and trail stewards for formalization, improved signage and better interpretation at sites such as the old switching yard adjacent to the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. Committee members agreed to extract trail- and park-related rows from their spreadsheet and flag items for DPW or trail stewards as appropriate.

No formal project approvals or funding commitments were made; members noted various items are pending RFPs or external approvals (for example, CHGC has an RFP out related to the MCI site) and will follow up with Town staff where appropriate.
