Aaron McClosco, Highway & Grounds superintendent, briefed the commission on the town’s winter maintenance strategy, equipment and last season’s operational summary.
McClosco said the department runs 22 plow routes with multiple trucks per route, maintains 13 de‑icing routes that include roads, sidewalks and parking lots, and uses a Road Weather Information System (ROA) with about 70 stations to optimize salt and brine application. He summarized last season’s activity as nine winter response events, roughly 2,000 tons of road salt applied, contractor hours tracked (8,93 contractor hours reported) and total winter maintenance expenditures (not including standard operating budgets) of about $614,177.44 for the season’s winter events.
He explained operations start in summer with procurement and route reviews, employee training and calibrations; the town coordinates with CMLP, police, fire and schools during significant events. McClosco also described vehicle and fleet maintenance, staffing challenges and measures taken to optimize treatment to balance fiscal and environmental concerns.
What’s next: continued staff training, fleet maintenance and monitoring of weather/ROA data to calibrate responses for the coming winter.
