Summary
The commission approved a 1–1.5 foot widening and in-kind cobble-edge replacement for 525 Lexington Road but declined to permit a new cobblestone apron, fieldstone wall with granite piers, or a post light, citing historic-district context and precedent.
The Historic Districts Commission on Nov. 13 approved a narrowed version of the application from the owners of 525 Lexington Road to repave and slightly widen an existing asphalt driveway, while withholding approval for a cobblestone apron, a fieldstone wall with granite piers, and a post-mounted light.
Dan Gordon, landscape architect for the applicants, said the work proposed to replace and repave an existing asphalt drive, widen the drive by about a foot to a foot-and-a-half on the east side, restore an existing cobble edge, add a cobblestone apron at the street, and install a fieldstone wall with granite piers and a dark-sky-compliant post light.
Commissioners questioned the apron and the wall, noting the commission has rarely approved new cobble aprons and that a freestanding wall at the street could appear inauthentic without a visible house behind it. Commissioner Luis (surname not given) said a decorative wall "by itself" risks appearing made-up rather than contextual. Commissioners also reiterated previous guidance discouraging post lights in favor of low bollards.
After discussion the commission agreed to allow the driveway repair and widening while explicitly withholding approval for the apron, post light, wall and granite piers. The motion to approve the driveway-only scope carried unanimously among the voting members present.
