Lexington public works details leaf-collection plan ahead of festival

Staff said routes are grouped east/west of Main Street and run on a two-week rotation (Tuesday/Wednesday one side, Thursday/Friday the other) so residents know the week their area will be served. Crews typically run five trucks for first and last passes (three trucks with pull-behind hoses and two automated trucks) and add a sixth truck during the heaviest periods. Residents were asked to place leaves at the edge of the yard (not in storm drains), avoid sticks or other debris that damage equipment, and not bag leaves for collection. The city will post the schedule on its website and use social posts to remind residents of when to have leaves out.
Staff said the schedule is designed to provide two-week windows for collection so crews can manage workload and maintain consistent service. Council members asked for clear public communication about exact dates so residents can place leaves before scheduled collection weeks.
