Planning board backs pursuing local landmark designation for Dunbar School

LEXINGTON — The Historic Preservation Commission on Nov. 18 voted to pursue local landmark designation for Dunbar School and asked staff to send a draft local landmark report to the State Historic Preservation Office for review.
Staff explained the designation process, saying the State Historic Preservation Office has 30 days to review the report, after which the city would hold a public hearing and, if appropriate, adopt an ordinance to formalize the designation. Staff said the designation would help preserve the school’s integrity and that developers who seek benefits or tax credits would need to meet standards tied to the landmark status.
"We're not going over the report. We'll go over the report the night of the public hearing. The applicant will have someone here that is well versed in the history of Dunbar School," staff said, describing the next steps.
Motion by Ms. Williams, second by Mr. Smith, that the Historic Preservation Commission pursue designation of Dunbar School as a local landmark and request staff send the local landmark report to the State Historic Preservation Office; the motion carried with members saying "aye" (vote tally not specified).
Staff will return with the State Historic Preservation Office comments and a public hearing date for possible ordinance adoption.
