Council recognizes new fire chief, issues proclamations and confirms board appointments

At its Nov. 12 meeting Lexington’s City Council recognized several community leaders, swore in a new fire chief, issued proclamations and approved a slate of board appointments.
City Manager Johnny Taylor announced the appointment of Michael R. Tufano as the city's new fire chief, effective Nov. 12, 2024; Chief Tufano thanked the council and said he intends to serve both the public and the department. Mayor Jason Hayes said he administered the oath that morning after a national search.
Council read and signed a proclamation declaring November 2024 as Hospice and Palliative Care Month; Laura Owen of Davidson County Hospice accepted the proclamation and noted the organization’s nearly 40 years of service and the ability to care for "nearly a thousand individuals every year." The council also proclaimed Nov. 17–23 as National Apprenticeship Week in Lexington and discussed an apprenticeship event at Finch Park.
On appointments, council approved multiple reappointments and new appointments across boards and commissions, including reappointments to the ABC Board, Planning Board/Board of Adjustment, Human Relations Commission, Parks & Recreation Advisory Board and others. Several nominations were deferred for follow-up when councilmembers absent from the meeting return.
All ceremonial items and appointments reported in the packet were approved by voice vote unless noted as deferred. Council thanked outgoing and continuing board members for their service.
