Council lowers speed limit on Fairview Drive after staff coordination with NCDOT

The Lexington City Council voted April 14 to adopt Ordinance 20-20-25, reducing the posted speed limit on a portion of Fairview Drive (State Road 2212) from 40 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. Zach McKenzie, the city's stormwater administrator who presented the item, said staff has discussed the change with NCDOT and that the city will file a municipal declaration and request DOT concurrence; once acknowledged, the city will install new signage and begin enforcement.
Council members raised placement and visibility questions for signage, especially approaching the hill where drivers tend to accelerate. Staff said they would review existing signs and consider additional advance signage prior to installing the revised regulatory sign.
The ordinance was adopted by motion and voice vote.
