Lexington council sets Jan. 13 public hearing for voluntary annexation off Old Salisbury Road

City Council on Nov. 25 adopted a resolution setting a Jan. 13, 2025, public hearing on a voluntary annexation petition for a parcel described along Old Salisbury Road. Josh Monk, who presented the petition, told council the city clerk’s investigation found the petition met statutory requirements and that the city can provide services to the parcel to the same extent as other properties in the city.
Monk said the certification is the formal step before a hearing and eventual ordinance: "So what we're doing tonight is you are receiving that city clerk's certification that the petition is valid," and staff recommended adoption of Resolution 2024-0436 to set the hearing. Councilman Holloway moved the measure and Councilman Wilburn seconded; the council adopted the resolution by voice vote.
Staff also noted a nearby small parcel associated with the US Foods property and recommended addressing that parcel in a future voluntary annexation to correct mapping discrepancies. After the Jan. 13 public hearing, council will consider an annexation ordinance to finalize the annexation if it so chooses.
The action was procedural: adoption of the resolution sets the hearing date and begins the public process required by state law; further council action will be needed to enact annexation after the hearing.
