Council adopts ordinance to accept $12,670 police wellness grant for peer support training

Lexington City Council adopted Ordinance 2024-440 on Sept. 23, 2024 to accept and record $12,670 in grant funding from the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police for officer wellness and training of a peer support team.
Chief of Police Robbie Ramage told the council the funds come from appropriations authorized by the General Assembly to support officer wellness initiatives. Ramage said the grant will be used for training members of a developing peer support team, which the department views as a nonclinical first-step resource for officers coping with job-related stressors ranging from interpersonal conflict to traumatic incidents.
"Tonight I come before you with a budget amendment to accept and record $12,670 that we were awarded after applying for a grant through the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police," Ramage said. He explained peer support trains experienced peers to provide nonclinical assistance and encourage early help-seeking among officers.
Councilman Myers moved to adopt Ordinance 2024-440 to accept the grant; Councilman Welburn seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote with the ayes recorded and no opposition noted.
The ordinance authorizes the city to record the grant in the fiscal year 2024–25 budget and to use the funds for peer-support training as described by the police chief. No further spending details or vendor names were specified at the meeting.
