Resident urges Lexington Human Relations Commission to support clemency push for Charles McNair

At its Oct. 7 meeting, the Lexington Human Relations Commission heard a public comment from resident Cheryl Lyden asking the commission to support clemency efforts for Charles McNair.
“My name is Cheryl Lyden. I’m at 613 Kildy Drive here in Lexington,” Lyden said, and asked commissioners to participate in ‘McNair Mondays’ by calling the governor’s office to urge clemency if McNair is not released before Christmas.
Lyden told the commission that McNair was 16 at the time of the offense, that he has served 44 years of a life sentence and that key witnesses in the case are deceased. She said advocates have limited case files and that prior local endorsements have supported McNair’s clemency effort.
The commission did not debate or vote on the request during public comment; staff and commissioners noted that questions or follow-up could be directed to Lyden outside the public-comment period. Chair Charlotte Edwards closed public comments and moved the meeting to regular business.
