House moves multiple Senate papers to committees; members honor Julie Jones and mark MLK Jr. Day

The chair ordered noncontroversial matters sent forthwith where no objections were raised.
Members paid tribute to Julie Jones, a senior legislative analyst in the Office of Fiscal and Program Review who retired after more than four decades of public service. A legislative sentiment read on the floor recognized her roles across nonpartisan legislative offices and thanked her for institutional knowledge, especially on tax policy.
The House also presented and debated a joint resolution commemorating Martin Luther King Jr., with several members stressing King's advocacy for civil and human rights, nonviolence and economic equity. Members urged the legislature to honor King's legacy through action and policy that advances justice and opportunity.
Floor time also included community-focused remarks: Representative Toole described the fundraising outpouring for 2-year-old Isaac Hall, recently diagnosed with leukemia, and asked the body to keep the family in thoughts and consider donations. Representative Stroud asked members to keep a Downeast community in mind amid an ongoing search for a missing plane and its occupants.
There were ceremonial recognitions as well: the House welcomed the 2024 Maine State Championship girls volleyball team from Narraguagus High School and Paralympic cyclist Clara Brown. The clerk reminded members to check mailboxes and noted other logistics and upcoming events.
Next steps: referred Senate papers will be considered by the committees named on the floor for printing, hearings and potential further action. The House adjourned to reconvene on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025 at 10:00 a.m., or at the call of the Speaker and Senate President.
