Jefferson County Commissioners Court on Oct. 1 introduced amendment No. 1 to a professional agreement for interpreted services for court proceedings that would add in-person American Sign Language interpreting and related legal-court interpreting services under a TexMAS contract. The amendment amount was read into the record as $1,123,432.26.
During discussion a court member asked how amounts charged could be treated as proprietary, and requested the county attorney examine whether taxpayers can be provided access to the pricing. An unidentified member of the court said, “Judge, I would wanna hold this if you don't mind,” and the judge instructed the court to table item A pending legal review.
Separately, a second purchasing item on the agenda (item B) was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote after no substantive discussion.
What the court recorded: item A (the interpreted services amendment) was tabled for legal review of proprietary or confidentiality claims; item B moved forward and was approved. There was no recorded vote that named individual commissioners for either action beyond the voice vote count of 'ayes.'
Next steps: The county attorney was asked to review the confidentiality and disclosure issues raised; the court will consider the item again after counsel provides guidance.
