Commissioners honor retiring employee, proclaim Gift of Life events and National Voter Registration Day

Jefferson County’s Commissioner's Court opened the meeting with ceremonial items: approval of a resolution honoring Jennifer Vogel for 30 years of service to county offices, and proclamations recognizing Gift of Life’s breast and ovarian cancer–awareness initiatives and National Voter Registration Day.

The court unanimously adopted a resolution commending Jennifer Vogel for decades of service in the sheriff’s office and constable’s office and invited Vogel, family members and colleagues to the lectern. Lawrence Goldberg, identifying himself as the new chief in Precinct 1, described Vogel as a mentor and friend and presented remarks on her career. Vogel thanked the court and attendees.

The judge read a proclamation recognizing Gift of Life’s 30 years of service in Southeast Texas and announcing the organization’s 14th annual Julie Richardson Procter 5K in downtown Beaumont on Oct. 26; Gift of Life representatives (including Regina, Linda Domino and event chairs from local industry) described the program’s free screening services, volunteer network and locations in Port Arthur, Beaumont and Orange. The organization said it has helped diagnose more than 300 women through its services and reported 18 women diagnosed through its program so far this year. The proclamation for National Voter Registration Day (designating Sept. 17, 2024) was also approved; a local organizer invited participants to a voter-registration event and brief program in the Jury and Panel Room following the meeting.

What to know: Gift of Life representatives emphasized free mammograms, diagnostic services, transportation and translation assistance for eligible women. The court’s ceremonial items were adopted by voice vote.
