They said markers placed during the Civil War sesquicentennial and other local efforts provide a foundation for a scenic designation that could boost tourism and preserve important sites.
Committee members asked whether the designation would confer extra protection and whether it favored any particular historical perspective. Historians said markers aim to describe events and that the designation is intended for preservation and education rather than promoting any faction. The committee recorded a favorable voice vote.
