The Senate Judiciary Committee adopted an amendment and passed House Bill 1058, which permits jurors to donate their per diem compensation and mileage reimbursement to eligible statewide nonprofit organizations. The amendment removes a prior numerical cap and directs the Administrative Office of the Courts to compile and maintain a list of eligible nonprofit entities, with public comment encouraged.
Under the amended language, eligible nonprofits should have primary goals such as crime victim assistance and counseling, shelter for victims of domestic violence, services for veterans, or legal education for students pursuing a Juris Doctor degree. Sponsors said the change balances ease for jurors who wish to donate with administrative safeguards and verification by the Office of the Courts.
The committee adopted the amendment by voice vote and later approved the amended bill by voice vote as well.
