Committee advances bill allowing CTE courses to substitute for core credits

Rep. Richardson said the measure grew from local district needs and an effort to reduce duplication of coursework that sometimes prevents students from completing CTE sequences.
Supporters said the change would help students finish valuable CTE pathways — for example, nursing or technical programs offered through partnership with community colleges — without having to repeat overlapping core requirements. The committee moved quickly and voted to pass the bill out of committee by voice vote.
Representative Richardson emphasized the bill was intended to align with other state learning‑options programs and to help students enter the workforce or pursue higher education when they leave high school.
