Committee backs scholarship program to grow Arkansas forester pipeline

The proposal provides scholarships of $4,000 per semester (presented in committee as an ongoing per-semester award) and includes plans for internships but does not guarantee a job at graduation. Fox said selection criteria and application particulars will be developed with UAM experts and that a committee involving the Division of Forestry and UAM will interview candidates.
Committee members supported the idea and suggested keeping selection criteria flexible so early applicants are not disadvantaged by measures such as ACT scores or GPA. Senator English emphasized the need to better advertise forestry career paths. The sponsor closed and the committee passed HB 1389 by voice vote.
