Senate Education panel approves cleanup of Academic Challenge Scholarship statute

The bill clarifies duplicate provisions in law created when the lottery program began and divides the work with SB130, which Stearch said will address substantive removal of the old scholarship language. "If you recall, when the lottery came into being, we created a new scholarship funded by lottery, yet we named it the same as the old name," Stearch said, adding that the last class eligible under the old statute was the class of 2009.
There were no questions from committee members. The presiding chair moved SB125 "do pass," a second was recorded, members voting "aye" and the chair announced, "The bill passes." SB125 will proceed from the committee as recommended.
The committee took the vote as a consent item; no public testimony was taken on SB125 during this meeting. The bill will next follow the Senate—s standard floor processing for committee-approved measures.
