Committee aligns school board audit training deadline with election cycles

LITTLE ROCK — The Senate Education Committee voted to advance House Bill 1021, which modifies the timeline for required audit training for newly elected school board members.
Tony Peltzoro of the Arkansas School Board Association told senators the bill does not change training content or requirements but aligns the deadline with the end of the calendar year: under the change, newly elected board members must complete audit training by Dec. 31 of the year after their election rather than within 15 months.
Senator Jane English and committee members discussed the content and approval of training; Peltzoro said training must be preapproved by the legislative audit division and cannot be completed online. The committee moved the bill for a favorable recommendation.
