Yarmouth committee approves summer reading and orchestra grants; baseball all-star talk continues

Courtney Butler, chair of the Yarmouth Community and Economic Development Committee, led interviews on Nov. 13 with local event organizers and brought the committee to voice votes approving several small community grants.

Mindy, youth services librarian for the Yarmouth town libraries, asked the committee for $9,175 to expand the 2025 summer reading program. Mindy said the library removed age limits to make the program "all inclusive and made it accessible to all," highlighted 41 community volunteers who provide donated prizes, and told the committee that overall participation has grown roughly 50% over the last three years with a marked increase among adults. Mindy said last summer the youth services department ran 78 distinct activities and that the library offers both paper and online tracking options and accessibility-friendly formats for people with vision impairment.

The committee voted by voice to approve the libraries' request after a brief round of questions about outreach and tourism marketing; Mindy described promotion through QR codes, social media and festival partnerships to attract both residents and visiting tourists.

Susan Sapoznick, president of the Cape Cod Community Orchestra, also requested support for the orchestra's fall concerts and season operations. Sapoznick said the volunteer orchestra has grown to 53 members, performs free concerts funded by advertising, donations and grants, and uses grant funds for programming and publicity. Committee members asked about venue and production costs; Sapoznick said the group is moving to an intermediate school for better lighting and sound and that grants and advertising underwrite most operating expenses. A separate, longer discussion involved the Dennis-Yarmouth (YD) Red Sox and the club's announcement that it will host the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game. A YD Red Sox representative told the committee the All-Star Game is expected to draw roughly 3,000 to 6,000 attendees and described three major draws (batting practice/scouts, a home-run-derby event, and the game itself). The representative said towns (Dennis and Yarmouth) helped pay about 75% of the cost for new safety netting installed on the field and that further capital needs remain, including dugout padding, fence repairs and a proposed warning track. He said the league sets the All-Star Game ticket price (reported as $10) and that gate receipts for the All-Star Game are controlled by the Cape Cod Baseball League; local proceeds for the team come from concessions, raffles and other on-site revenue.

Several committee members pressed the club about long-term sustainability and whether recurring town support is appropriate for an organization the committee viewed as operating with substantial earned revenue.
