Bob, identified as the president of the Historical Society and a member of the Historic Commission, described a research effort that has identified roughly 475 area residents who served in the Revolution. He proposed two near‑term projects: placing SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) markers at the Ancient Cemetery to honor 50–51 identified Revolutionary participants (estimated at $135 per embossed marker plus installation), and pursuing a larger granite monument that could list names and be expandable for future wars.
"They're like 38 pounds a piece," Bob said of the proposed markers, describing a durable design that would be set in cement. He also said granite monuments cost substantially less than marble, and provided preliminary vendor outreach and rough cost ranges.
Because timing for procurement and fabrication is tight, Bob asked for a letter of support from CEDC for a Community Preservation Act (CPA) grant application and discussed potential match opportunities. A committee member moved for the letter of support; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Committee members also offered to help with research and recommended coordination with the Select Board and town staff on locating monuments and ensuring proper permitting. Staff noted CPA procedures require multiple quotes and a town vote if funding is awarded.
Next steps: staff will draft a letter of support for the CPA application and work with the Historical Commission on matching funds and vendor quotes. The committee voted to supply the letter; more detailed funding and site decisions will follow.
