Marshalltown presents SEL steering plan and early Panorama survey results; emotional regulation flagged as a growth area
Summary
District SEL leaders outlined a multi-tier SEL framework (elementary Fly 5; secondary InControl/Can Do You), adult-wellness micro-PD sessions and Panorama student surveys showing low emotional regulation and social awareness in grades 3–12; staff reported 80–90% participation among students with parental consent and plans for further survey windows and targeted interventions.

Valerie, district SEL lead, and steering-committee members presented the districtwide social-emotional learning plan and early Panorama survey results, describing a multi-tiered approach that pairs curriculum with data-driven interventions.
Valerie said the committee’s "big rocks" are driving core SEL curriculum and academic supports, adult wellness, and data and assessment. She noted the district adopted a K–12 SEL curriculum and that elementary buildings are using Fly 5, while secondary schools use InControl and Can Do You.
On assessments, the district is piloting Panorama surveys as a baseline this year. Valerie said parental consent was obtained through registration and that, among students with consent, participation rates are "between that 80–90%" depending on the building. She outlined the district plan to administer three survey windows this year (fall, January, April) to track change over time.
Early Panorama findings prompted the steering committee to identify emotional regulation and social awareness as district growth areas for grades 3–12, while supportive relationships and school climate scored comparatively stronger in elementary buildings. The committee is using the data to guide targeted instruction, collaborative problem solving and parent training opportunities; the district also offers professional training levels in Collaborative Problem Solving and intends to expand parent skill-building sessions.
District leaders described adult-wellness work and micro-PD sessions for staff, referencing a beginning-of-year presentation and ongoing workshops focusing on physiological needs, movement, sleep routines and strategies to reduce decision fatigue.
Next steps: counselors will present Panorama data to each building after the next survey window, and the SEL steering committee will pursue targeted interventions where surveys indicate need.
