Board members reported continuing work by the policy committee on two sensitive governance items: board social‑media use and facility naming rights.
Directors Thomas and Walker and other committee members said the topics contain nuance that may be better addressed in a work session with legal counsel before bringing formal policy language back to the full board. Committee members said they plan to consult the district’s legal counsel and the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) attorney, and that the IASB has been asked to make a representative available for a meeting or call.
The board emphasized that the social‑media discussion is limited to board member use (not staff, teachers or students) and that questions include what is allowable in posts, when posts should be considered official, and how to treat blocking or similar actions. On facility naming rights, the committee said it will review the scope of naming proposals and whether and how to authorize third‑party naming agreements.
Next steps: committee and administration will schedule a work session with legal counsel and return to the full board with recommendations.
