Parent group urges Linn‑Mar schools to prepare teachers for inclusive Thanksgiving lessons

Elizabeth Esling, a parent and board member of the Marion Alliance for Racial Equity, urged the Linn‑Mar Community School District to help teachers approach Thanksgiving lessons with greater historical accuracy and sensitivity. Reading a letter to the board, Esling asked the district to proactively share resources and guidance with staff before the November holidays so classroom activities do not unintentionally misrepresent colonization and Indigenous histories.
"Because of the very real chance that Thanksgiving might unintentionally be observed in ways that do not portray an accurate picture of the colonization of These United States, we encourage you to be proactive in reaching out to your teachers and administrators this year to support them as they prepare for the November holidays," Esling said during public comment.
Esling said the group previously sent resources to Superintendent Kortmeyer and the board and asked the district to re‑circulate materials and open conversations with educators and students. The letter also requested continued work around Indigenous perspectives both in the lead‑up to and following the Thanksgiving holiday.
The board acknowledged receipt of the comments but did not engage in a dialogue with the speaker, noting public‑comment protocol that limits remarks to three minutes and avoids back‑and‑forth during the meeting. The superintendent and board did not announce any immediate policy changes at the meeting; Esling’s request will remain part of the public record for board follow‑up.
