Superintendent Kortmeyer reports early enrollment uptick, class‑size averages and $5.5M budget reduction plan

"As of today, we look to be up in kids in seats numbers by about 43 students," Kortmeyer said. He warned the board not to conflate these early figures with certified enrollment.
On class sizes, Kortmeyer reported elementary averages that range from about 19.77 students in first grade to 23.5 students in fourth grade and noted one section at 27 students. Kortmeyer reminded the board the district is in the middle of implementing $5,500,000 in general fund reductions over a two‑year period, which could affect class‑size decisions and services.
Kortmeyer also described communications work, including a new quarterly presence in the Marion Messenger newsletter in partnership with the City of Marion and Marion Independent School District, and detailed facility projects: the high‑school extension and activity center schematic work, foundation pours for the performance venue, and administration building finishing and furniture deliveries scheduled for September.
Board members discussed the district's partnership with Alliant Energy and asked for earlier parent notifications when Alliant temperature triggers could prompt early dismissals. Kortmeyer said staff will continue refining messaging to families about possible weather‑related schedule changes.
