The Linn‑Mar Community School District board spent a substantial portion of its regular meeting debating which legislative priorities to advance to the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB).
Board members identified preschool expansion, student mental‑health supports, teacher recruitment and overall school funding as recurring priorities. One trustee urged a focused slate of three to four priorities so the district’s voice would be memorable at the delegate assembly; others said maintaining flexibility was important because unexpected bills can arise once the session begins.
Trustees and staff discussed the mechanics of the process: districts are encouraged to submit priorities by Aug. 19 and the board may refine its list at the Aug. 12 meeting before final submission. Staff noted districts can propose additional wording to IASB’s packet and that the IASB legislative committee reviews and may incorporate or reject suggested language ahead of the delegate assembly.
Members raised service‑delivery concerns tied to mental health, including the availability of AEA crisis counselors and the role AEA staff play in IEP/504 processes. Several trustees said staffing shortages mean policy changes alone may not expand services without additional personnel or resources.
The board did not take a final vote on a prioritized list at this meeting; trustees asked colleagues and staff to submit suggestions in advance of the August meetings so the board can adopt a recommended slate for submission to IASB.
