Love Levelland outlines long-term disaster recovery committee to help residents left behind by FEMA

Levelland — Love Levelland presented a new Long-Term Recovery Committee to the City Council on July 15, saying it will step into unmet needs left when federal and nonprofit disaster programs end. Dallas Pena, introduced as president of Love Levelland, told the council the group has coordinated with FEMA, Red Cross and Catholic Charities and will focus on aid “where essentially FEMA and Red Cross drop,” directing donated money to households that still need help.
Pena said the committee will include nine voting members and additional community and governmental advisers, and that the group will accept applications for assistance both online and in person. “One of our mottos at Love Levelland is ‘Neighbors Helping Neighbors,’ ” Pena said, describing rapid grassroots fundraising and volunteer coordination after the May 29 storm.
Megan Thompson will chair the committee, Pena said, and the group intends to prioritize cases that fall outside federal or Red Cross assistance. Council members thanked Love Levelland for its work and encouraged staff and the nonprofit to share details on application timelines and any data needed to coordinate with city recovery efforts.
Council members asked staff to stay in contact with the committee and with FEMA so the city and nonprofit efforts do not duplicate assistance. Love Levelland said it is preparing a formal application process and will circulate details to city staff and the public in the coming weeks.
