The claims committee approved a modification to Newton County—s joiner agreement that adds previously excluded constables and extends social security and PERS retirement coverage.
Director Higgins presented the item, explaining the requested effective dates in the handout behind tab K and noting staff would complete required paperwork with the Social Security Administration to confirm historical reporting. "They would like to ... add their constables that were previously excluded; we would like to move that forward and ask for your approval for both social security and retirement coverage with the effective dates 12/31/2024 and then 01/01/2025 respectively," Higgins said.
A committee member moved approval and another seconded; the committee voted in favor and the motion was approved by voice vote.
Why it matters: adding constables into coverage affects employee retirement crediting and contribution reporting for Newton County and requires coordination with Social Security and agency staff to finalize documentation.
Next steps: staff will finalize paperwork and confirm any historical Social Security reporting with the Social Security Administration as part of implementation.
