Board approves new building and truck scale for Bell Salvage at 501 Frio Drive

The Ames Zoning Board of Adjustment voted March 26 to approve a special-use permit for Bell Salvage to construct a new 4,200-square-foot sorting building and a truck scale at 501 Frio Drive.
Planning staff said salvage yards in the general industrial zone require a special-use permit for new development tied to salvage operations. Justin Moore presented the site plan and told the board the proposal includes paved access, required parking, landscaping in the front yard, ADA access, and no expansion of salvage piles. Staff's recommendation included conditions to allow removal of an existing high screen wall between two new driveways where landscaping would be added, but to require repair and maintenance of the rest of the screen wall around the site.
Applicant Sean Peters, the site planner, answered technical questions and said the owner does not propose additional piles. No members of the public testified on the item. Patton moved to approve Alternative 1; White House seconded and the motion passed by roll-call vote.
The board advised that appeals may be filed to a court of record within 30 days of filing of the decision.
