Teague cites 988 integration, crisis responders and resilience hubs as safety priorities

Mayor Bruce Teague used the State of the City address to describe steps the city has taken to expand crisis response, non-police options and resilience for extreme weather.

Teague said the city is working with Johnson County to integrate mobile crisis response into emergency dispatch so that certain 911 calls are diverted to the 988 crisis hotline. He credited two mental‑health liaisons and "our new cold responder police officer model" for helping expand active response and participation.

On community resilience, Teague described pilot resilience hubs at Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County and the Iowa City Bike Library to strengthen local organizations' ability to maintain services before, during and after extreme weather. He also said the city awarded $1,000,000 to the free medical clinic to expand capacity and improve accessibility for residents with disabilities.

Teague highlighted a fire-department partnership with Community Connect, an online secure platform to share emergency information with first responders, and reiterated a voluntary lead reduction program that offers awareness, optional service-line insurance and grants to help homeowners with lead testing and pipe replacement.

The mayor framed these actions as investments that aim to get to root causes, strengthen non-police crisis responses and increase community preparedness. He did not announce ordinance changes or new statutory authorities during the address; implementation plans and timelines were not provided.
