Board approves youth apprenticeship, Magma Math pilot, SRO stipends and a surplus steer

Magma Math pilot: The board approved a one-year pilot of Magma Math for eighth-grade general math and Algebra I so teachers can view students’ work playback and get immediate feedback. Staff said the pilot is a trial with training for teachers; if expanded, the per-student price would decline. Board members asked about teacher workload and were told the tool is usable during class, for exit tickets and for one-on-one tutoring.
SRO supervision stipend: The board approved a $2,500 supervision stipend for each SRO to compensate required extra duties and events. Staff told the board the stipend responds to increasing demands on SROs beyond their base duties.
Surplus property: The board approved surplusing a roughly 600-pound Black Angus steer (requested minimum of $1,500) as an instructional opportunity for students to plan a sale and budget.
Why it matters: The apprenticeship and math pilot expand in-district training and instructional tools, while the SRO stipend responds to staff workload. The steer surplus is explicitly tied to curriculum and vocational learning.
