Concord HDC asks Blue Mercury for smaller serif option, scaled drawings before approving Walden Street sign

The Town of Concord Historic District Commission on an online meeting continued a proposal by Linear Retail Concord No. 1 LLC to install a Blue Mercury fascia and projecting (blade) sign at 4 Walden Street, asking the applicant for additional details and design alternatives.
Mark Bobrowski, representing Linear Retail and Blue Mercury, said the application is “a straightforward swap” of the existing fat-face sign for a new stainless-steel-faced sign painted deep navy with 9-inch letters. He also reported that the Planning Board voted 5–1 to grant the special permit for the formula business use, though the written permit had not yet been issued.
Commissioners focused on three issues: the sign face material and finish, the visual proportions of the lettering relative to the sign band, and the corporate sans‑serif font. One commissioner noted the drawings show letters that occupy nearly the full vertical height of the existing band and asked for scaled elevations and a matte (not glossy) finish to reduce visual prominence. Another commissioner asked that the blade sign logo be reduced in size; an attendee suggested a 12-inch square logo instead of the larger option shown.
Economic Vitality Manager Mimi Graney, speaking in public comment, observed that other Walden Street businesses use sans‑serif marks, noting existing precedent for non‑serif corporate marks in the immediate commercial block.
The commission voted unanimously to continue the application to October 9 to give the applicant time to submit accurate scaled elevations, an alternative serif font rendering for the fascia sign, clarification on the backer material and finish, and a reduced-size option for the projecting blade sign. The applicant said they would coordinate with HDC staff and submit revised drawings in advance of the next meeting.
Next steps: the HDC will review the revised drawings and finish samples at its October meeting; the applicant may present a mock-up or photo of a taped-on scale mock-up as requested by commissioners.
