Commission approves minor modification allowing diamond-pier footings for Deaconess boardwalk

Greg Hogman of Epsilon Associates told the commission that during boardwalk construction at the New England Deaconess Association site the contractor encountered very firm material about 2.5 feet down and that several aluminum auger pipe bases had sheared. He proposed replacing the auger pipes with diamond-pier footings that have a slightly larger footprint; swapping 34 auger pipes for 34 diamond-pier footings increases the boardwalk’s total alteration by roughly 26 square feet.
Hogman said the team revised plans to show the diamond-pier detail and proposed enlarging the wetland replication area modestly (to roughly 30–35 square feet total) near an area where an old boardwalk will be abandoned. The commission found the modification consistent with the project’s allowed scope, approved the minor modification by motion and recorded vocal ayes.
The contractor will proceed using the diamond-pier footings, and the project will finalize the small replication area during preconstruction.
