The Ft. Zumwalt R-II Board of Education approved a new insurance brokerage arrangement and completed a quarterly policy review during the meeting.
Insurance broker: Staff and the district’s broker solicited responses from multiple agencies (USI, CBIZ, MMA among others). After interviews and peer-district checks, staff recommended MMA. Board members discussed potential plan design changes the new broker could help offer, including introducing a lower-cost, high-deductible option to provide families with a more affordable alternative. The board moved and approved MMA as the district’s insurance broker by voice vote.
Quarterly policy review: Jeremy presented the quarterly policy packet, noting many revisions reflect the 2023 legislative session and MSBA recommendations. A board member asked whether crowdfunding and donation definitions in the packet applied only at the district level or also to parent groups; Jeremy clarified the district-level definitions provide guidance for district gifts while parent and PTO groups retain their established fundraising abilities under the policy language. The board approved the quarterly policy review by voice vote.
Board members framed the insurance-broker change as a potential tool for recruitment and retention through expanded benefit choices; staff said further analysis of plan options and claims data would follow if the board pursues plan changes.
