District launches bus-tracking pilot; board approves planned technology expenditures

Superintendent Dr. Lathan told the board on Oct. 22 that Springfield R‑XII launched a pilot program enabling parents to track buses in real time using the Where's the Bus app and student ID scans at Field, Sherwood, Pershing and Parkview schools. The superintendent said next semester all schools will participate in the program.
Earlier in the meeting, Sean Dilday presented four change orders related to technology purchases tied to bond construction projects. Dilday said the purchases are for equipment to be bought by the district and installed by contractors, not unplanned extras. Board members asked whether the purchases were planned or true additions; Dilday confirmed they are planned purchases in preparation for new buildings.
The board voted to approve the technology expenditures unanimously. Dr. Lathan also reminded the community about upcoming election day, the district's Nov. 7 SPS University mental-health event at Kickapoo High School, and that emails with site-level follow-up would go to families impacted by the boundary votes.
