Board approves multiple grants, extends contracts and takes executive-session action
Summary
The board approved six grant awards (including educator-in-residence and McKinney-Vento grants), extended a short-term contract with Transact Communications, tabled and later approved a separate contract after executive session, and approved a consent agenda covering A–AA.
At the July meeting the Mississippi State Board of Education approved a package of grant awards and took several contract-related votes.
Dr. Gavin presented six grants for board approval: an EIRR grant with Kemper County for $485,799 over five years; educator-in-residence grants totaling $1,457,742 for grades 4–8 (five years); two workforce professional-development grants totaling $600,000 (three years) to the Mississippi Council on Economic Education and the Mississippi Construction Education Foundation; a reading intervention coach support grant to Greene County ($236,504, three years); five competitive dyslexia pilot grants totaling $675,000 (three years); and seven competitive McKinney-Vento awards for homeless students totaling $1,260,936 (one year). The board moved, seconded and approved these grants by voice vote (SEG 1606–1647).
The department also asked the board to modify a short-term contract with Transact Communications, extending work through Aug. 30, 2024; the board approved a one-month extension to allow staff time to bring a longer contract back for consideration. One contract item was tabled at the meeting and, after a closed executive session on personnel and litigation matters, the board returned and approved the previously tabled item, identified in the public record as a contract with Imagination Station, Inc., for fiscal year 2024–25.
The board approved the consent agenda (items A through AA) by voice vote and then voted to enter executive session under Mississippi Code Annotated §25-41-7(4)(a),(b) to discuss personnel and litigation matters; the session was convened and later closed, and the board resumed public action on the previously tabled contract.
