Mississippi launches MSIS 2; districts begin data loads and dashboards coming

Deborah Donovan, chair of the Data Governance Committee, said MSIS 2 "is online, beginning July first," and that districts are already assigning users and requesting MSIS IDs.

The new Mississippi Student Information System (MSIS 2) went live July 1, Donovan told the committee on July 17 in Jackson. She said the system is matching incoming kindergarten and other student records against existing data to reduce duplicate MSIS IDs and that the first full data extracts from vendors started the day before the meeting. "We've seen evidence that we're reducing the number of duplicate MSIS IDs," Donovan said.

Why it matters: MSIS 2 centralizes student enrollment, attendance and demographic data used for reporting and assessment. Committee members heard that data‑quality dashboards will be turned on for districts within weeks so local officials can review organizational data (schools, districts, calendars) and then move to enrollment and attendance indicators.

Details reported to the committee included: districts can already assign permissions and request MSIS IDs; validation work is underway to check incoming records; and staff are preparing guidance and dashboards that will replace some catalog tools. Donovan said the rollout is a large, complex change and asked districts and work groups to stay flexible as vendor data are validated.

The committee did not take any formal action specific to MSIS 2 during the meeting; the discussion was an informational status update. The committee approved routine meeting minutes and the agenda before proceeding with work group reports and then adjourned.
