Stillwater honors coaches and trainers after Sept. 24 student medical emergency

The Stillwater Area Public Schools board on Tuesday publicly recognized a team of coaches and athletic trainers who helped revive a student during a Sept. 24 medical emergency.
"Keegan Hawk is alive and well," Nate Cox, activities director at the high school, told the board as he introduced the staff being honored. Cox named Paul Wieland, Matt Hemingway, Olivia Dubois and Mike Renfro for their actions and thanked partner emergency responders.
Several of the coaches described the sequence: staff performed chest compressions, applied an automated external defibrillator and stabilized the student before emergency medical services arrived. "Our training prepared us and it worked," Mike Renfro said, describing how CPR, AED operation and emergency‑action planning made a difference.
Board members asked about AED availability. Presenters said the high school keeps multiple AEDs accessible: on the sidelines and athletic cart, one outside the activities director’s office, and a third near the cafeteria/main gym so devices are reachable for events and for spectators.
A parent who spoke to board members afterward is organizing fundraising to buy more AEDs; the board asked the superintendent to follow up on how community members can support AED purchases.
The recognition preceded the meeting’s regular agenda and the board thanked the staff and EMS for the fast response and the student’s recovery.
