Board centralizes secondary volunteer coordination while retaining elementary VSCs

The Anoka-Hennepin School Board voted unanimously Dec. 9 to reorganize the volunteer service coordinator (VSC) model. The approved plan keeps VSCs at the elementary level to preserve school‑based relationships while centralizing secondary recruitment, vetting and certain support functions in an effort to achieve budget savings and consistent practices.
Michelle Trailstad, executive officer for community education and government relations, said the centralization aims to maintain resources for booster clubs and volunteer coaches while preserving elementary-based recruitment and relationship-building. Board members discussed the value of volunteer hours (previously estimated at more than $5 million in in-kind services) and stressed keeping community connections at elementary schools. Director Langenfeld and others noted the district will explore funding and role standardization across sites.
The motion to approve the volunteer service coordinator model reorganization passed on a voice vote with a recorded tally of 6-0.
