Barrington council appoints Jason Knight as town district court prosecutor

The Barrington Town Council voted unanimously Oct. 7 to appoint Jason Knight as the town’s district court prosecutor, filling the position left vacant by the sudden death of Lou Pohlner earlier this year. President Castell said the council had held a lengthy executive session to evaluate applicants and moved in open session to appoint Knight and direct the solicitor to draft employment paperwork.
‘‘I would like to move to appoint Jason Knight, district court prosecutor, to succeed Lou Pohlner, and I’d like to move to direct the solicitor’s office to draft a contract between Mr. Knight and the town of Barrington,’’ President Castell said.
Councilor Klute, who spoke in support of the appointment, cited Knight’s current practice and prior work in the office of the attorney general and said Knight’s academic credentials made him ‘‘a super well qualified applicant.’’ The council recorded aye votes from Vice President Humm, Councilor Conway, Councilor Cloutier, Councilor Burard and President Castell. The motion passed 5–0.
The council’s action followed the executive session notice given under Rhode Island’s Open Meetings Act and a statement that the individual had been advised of the opportunity to request an open discussion. The solicitor’s office will prepare the contract documentation next, the council said.
The council welcomed Knight at the meeting and the motion concluded with a formal roll call vote. The town did not provide further details about the contract terms at the meeting.
