Dell Rapids commits $5,000 match for Community Forestry Grant

The Dell Rapids City Council agreed to a $5,000 city commitment to pursue a Community Forestry Grant administered through the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Southeastern Council of Governments (CCOG).
Sophie Johnson, community development manager with CCOG, told the council the program is a 50/50 matching grant of up to $5,000 (meaning a total project value up to $10,000) that can be used for planting new trees, trimming and pruning existing trees, or conducting a tree inventory. The application is due Oct. 4; award notifications are expected later this year or early next year, and any planting or pruning would occur in 2025.
Councilmember Gary moved to commit the $5,000 local match; the motion was seconded by Cavigelli and approved by voice vote. City staff noted Dell Rapids already budgets funds for tree care in 2025 and intends to allocate $4,000 for maintenance and $1,000 for new trees if the grant application proceeds.
Sophie emphasized that the grant requires two quotes for approved tree list items and that staff would work with the city administrator on the application.
