Splashtacular inspected the Mobridge Aquatic Center slide and reported defects the company described as safety issues that must be addressed before the slide can safely reopen.
Kirk Schmaltz summarized the vendor's findings: seam separations between slide sections, paint and gel-coat chips exposing fiberglass that could cause splinters, flexing of stair supports and cracking in the fiberglass ride surface. Splashtacular provided a written estimate that breaks work into three components: steel-support repairs and rust remediation ($34,133), interior seam realignment, caulking and gel-coating ($37,220), and exterior repaint ($14,565), for a total estimate of $85,918.
Council discussion focused on whether to complete all repairs at once or phase the scope to address the immediate safety items first (seams, stairs and interior blemishes) and postpone cosmetic exterior painting. The vendor indicated a maintenance program (annual buffing, waxing and inspection) is available and will provide pricing for recurring service.
Outcome: Council did not take immediate action; staff and the pool committee will return with more detailed cost options, a schedule and the vendor's maintenance program proposal.
