At its Nov. 21 meeting the Somerset City Commission approved routine consent and administrative items including the meeting agenda, minutes from Nov. 7 and claims and hand checks totaling $77,209.93 for the period 11/07/2024–11/20/2024. The commission also approved surplus property disposition (including used body armor), and noted a payroll change after a police officer completed certification training.
Personnel: The commission recognized a newly certified officer (Hamelin), who completed a 12-week course and was placed at Grade 17 Step A ($25.31 hourly) effective Nov. 18, 2024. Staff and commissioners offered congratulations and noted continuing field training.
Surplus property: Staff listed items for surplus (body armor among them, approximately four years old); the commission approved declaring the items surplus to be transferred to another government entity with proceeds returned to the city.
Accessibility concern: During public comment a resident (Speaker 7) said hearing-impaired attendees struggle to hear from the back row and asked whether meeting transcripts or alternate accommodations could be provided. Staff responded that hiring verbatim transcriptionists is expensive and recommended practical steps—speakers use microphones and adjust room speakers; staff said they would explore ways to improve audio and seating so residents with hearing aids can follow meetings.
Next steps: Staff will follow up on surplus disposition logistics, process the payroll update, and assess audio/speech capture improvements or low-cost transcription options to increase accessibility.
